History:

Designed by Clarence "Kelly" Johnson in 1937, the P-38 Lightning was an astonishing high-altitude interceptor. The Lightning was a complete break-away from conventional airframe design, power, and at long last, armament. While the prototype XP-38 with the serial number 37-457 was built under tight secrecy and made its maiden flight on January 27, 1939, with Air Corps test pilot and P-38 project officer, Lt. Benjamin S. Kelsey, at the controls. The P-38 was a very versatile aircraft used for dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing and photo reconnaissance missions. The P-38 Lightning was powered by two liquid-cooled engines (Allison V-1710) and had a top speed of 414 miles per hour and carried a 20-mm cannon and four machine guns in its nose. Richard Bong has earned 40 victories from P-38 (as called it “Marge”) that he has flown during the Pacific Theater of Operations and the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations.
